Candidate Quality – has it actually become more difficult to find quality?

At Briscoe Search & Consulting, we think we have experienced a very interesting paradox in the marketplace over the last 9 months. Whilst candidate quantity has definitely risen across the board in our job application responses (up 31% compared to this time last year), we have found that great candidates are still as difficult to source compared to last year’s infamous candidate short market. As a result, our executive search approach has been used by a higher percentage of clients (up by 23% on ’08) to find those elusive stars.

Are you finding the same thing? Has the struggle in sourcing quality candidates continued for you? Have you ran a job advertisement lately, expecting to be inundated with quality, only to realize the market is still short of stars willing to “put themselves out there” in the active job market? Or are you a candidate who has become very choosy about which jobs you will even enter into communication about?
